(In fact you taught yourself everything, it’s the way you began)
Let’s take a walk to the border
If there’s a guard, we’ll ignore him
Fold up the maps, throw them away.
Now let’s take a look at the prisons
Are they the government’s business?
Close down the gaols, throw them away.
Let’s take a look at the schools now
They suit the person who rules, yes
But do they satisfy you friend,
And did they teach you to think free?
You learned to bow your head
You didn’t learn to bake bread
They said accept the facts
They told you don’t talk back!
Without them you can’t learn anything
That’s what they want you to feel and think
In fact you taught yourself everything
Look at the way you began:
Did someone teach you to crawl?
Did someone teach you to walk?
Did someone teach you to talk?
Did someone teach you to think?
Close down the schools x 3
Throw them away.
Exercise your mind and your body will follow

A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
A record so nice, I bought it twice. I haven't stopped listening to "Book Of Curses" digitally since it came out in November. So when Bandcamp Friday came around and I saw a few copies of the limited edition were left, it was time to buy it physically. A perfect, contemporary encapsulation of where the four members came from before, and where they'll take music going forward. Here's to hoping they make it to the States when this whole pandemic thing gets sorted out. Ape Mummy
This Seattle 3-piece blast out their frisky punk LP via Kill Rock Stars. You might want to avoid their couch, though. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 16, 2015
This Baltimore group rough up post-punk with dark post-hardcore riffs and chaotic choruses, never losing a fine-tuned sense of melody. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 13, 2024
